ChatGPT and Threads Maintain Download Momentum in March

Threads and ChatGPT Dominate App Download Charts The latest app download charts from Appfigures for March 2025 reveal that Threads and ChatGPT are leading the way in popularity. After dropping out in February, Threads made a strong comeback last month and secured a spot in the top 10 most downloaded apps. Meta's Twitter clone app, which runs on iOS, continues to generate significant interest. Interestingly, Threads seems to be more popular among iOS users compared to Android users. This could be attributed to regional preferences, as Android dominates the European, Asian, African, and South American markets, while iOS is more commonly used in North America and Oceania. However, Threads is still experiencing consistent growth in terms of downloads overall. In January, Meta reported that Threads had reached 320 million monthly active users. Based on this data, it is anticipated that the app will surpass 350 million active users by Meta's next performance update at the end of this month. While it still has a long way to go compared to X, which recently announced 600 million monthly active users, Threads is steadily increasing its user base. On a different note, ChatGPT remains a popular choice among users, highlighting OpenAI's first-mover advantage in the AI tools market. Although Meta AI and X's Grok offer comparable, if not superior, AI capabilities to ChatGPT, the latter's early launch has made it more synonymous with AI usage. However, with Google's AI tools gaining momentum, it remains to be seen how long ChatGPT can maintain its leading position. Despite the impending increase in prices due to Trump's tariffs, interest in Temu remains high. Additionally, TikTok experienced a slight drop in the rankings despite recording higher overall downloads in March (45 million compared to 42 million in February). Overall, Meta's apps continue to dominate the app market, while the trends indicate that Threads is experiencing steady growth and ChatGPT remains the preferred AI tool of choice.
