With the increasing use of AI-generated content in the digital space, the role of virtual avatars in reshaping digital interaction has become a major focus. According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, AI avatars based on creators will become a growing part of the social media interaction—a step that aligns with Meta's push to integrate more AI elements. Similarly, TikTok is likely to follow this trend, as indicated by a feature update for Douyin, TikTok's Chinese counterpart. Douyin's new initiative, referred to as the “V Project“ by AIbase, leverages AI to create avatars that mimic creators' personas, permitting constant user interaction—regardless of the creator's online presence. This approach aligns closely with Meta’s evolving virtual avatar model which was exhibited at its recent Connect event. These video avatar tools allow creators to construct video versions of themselves. Douyin, having more experience in the domain, has been offering virtual avatars for some time now. This feature is particularly popular among continuous shopping live-stream hosts. These digital characters have been yielding significant results, making them highly attractive for brand partners. With over 993,000 digital avatar companies registered in China, these AI-powered characters have boosted the 24/7 streaming in different apps. Douyin's updated AI models will facilitate increased user engagement, including interfacing within comment streams, replying to direct messages, and participating in live stream chats. While this may free creators to focus on other aspects of their growth, it's uncertain how appealing these virtual characters will be to Western audiences, considering that many Chinese market trends have not found much success in the U.S, such as shopping on TikTok. Regardless, the ongoing rise of AI bots in the digital interaction landscape indicates that this trend is likely to continue with more applications aiming to incorporate AI bot interactions.
